Zac's mom came to visit us! For FIVE days. Yep, she traveled halfway around the world for FIVE days. Thanks to that lovely volcano in Iceland... She was stuck in London for a week, and ended up having a pretty cool vacation there, but we still wish she could've been with us for longer. At least we got her, though! Nuala and Bran were soooo excited, and kept having to wait "one more day..." for her. They were thrilled when she finally arrived. Finally. She got here April 22 (late), and left April 28 (early), so this post is a little late. Yeah... I'm slightly behind on blogging. And lots of other things. Eh.
In downtown Sofia.
We took her up to Rila Monastery, which we love. You've no doubt seen it before on our blog, and I can pretty much guarantee you'll see it again. It's a very cool place.
A COLLAGE of photos outside the monastery... the neat frescoes, etc. Aren't collages great for people who post bazillions of pictures? Not that you know anyone like that...ha.
And doughnuts! Yum. Nuala loved this cat, and there was a gigantic dog there that Bran kept throwing pieces of his doughnut to. And we gave the dog all the sheep's yogurt we bought. It was gross. Last time we got yogurt there, it was quite tasty. We think it must have been the water buffalo variety that time...
The bottom two pictures show Nuala and a little dog, Bellana, who "works" at the cave/nearby church. She kept begging Nuala to pet her, and Nuala kept doing it, of course. We would love to get a dog or cat, especially for them! But the lifestyle... so not conducive to owning a pet. At least for us. We do have a vase full of tadpoles.
The bottom right pic in the collage above shows Nuala near a little shrine up the trail from the cave. There are folded up papers with prayers and petitions written on them stuffed between all the rocks. Rila is the "Jerusalem of Bulgaria," and is a center of pilgrimage for people of the Eastern Orthodox religion. You can even stay the night at the monastery.
Here's a cave collage. Only those who are "free from sin" are able to go all the way through it. It was a bit tricky negotiating the exit tunnel with Maeve wrapped onto me, but obviously I couldn't be the only one NOT "free from sin." Z would never let me hear the end of it.Saw the amphitheater...

Nuala and Bran entertained us on-stage.

Fun on the trampoline...
...and with bubbles...

Looks like fun and well now that mom is back she has shared all her fun adventures with us she had a blast with you all!!!!
How fun. It makes me want to be concrete about coming to see ya. It WILL happen some day.
Fun! Bummer that you only got her for 5 days, but if she had to be stranded anywhere, London sounds like a pretty good choice to me! I love the line about Maeve, lol, she is so cute. Collages ARE the best! Thanks for introducing me to them...I'm glad y'all had fun, I'm very impressed that you were able to manoeuvre the cave with Maeve strapped to you! Does that mean you are the free-est from sin, since you had all that extra 'baggage' and still made it through?
wow! amazing pictures! the scenery is beautiful. just hopped over from another blog. great post! :) we are headed half way around the world in three weeks to Turkey for a conference. I can't wait!
Oh fun times! Seriously cute pictures. I also love the line about Maeve, ha ha, she is pretty awesome and super adorable and all that! Grandma's a trooper! We could sure use some tips for all that Seattle rain!
I enjoyed getting caught up on you blog! i feel like I have been in the twilight zone lately, but I am trying to get out of it and start posting more often. You kids are so cute and creative! What little troopers! And, my goodness i just love Maeve's hair and grin!
Great pictures! As usual! Your kids are just so cute. I like Nuala's haircut! And Maeve...oh my gosh.
I love how you tell us the good as well as the not-so-good in a funny way. Those of us who are parents can totally relate!
Great visit. So nice that your family will travel half way around the world to see you. Not sure why they wouldn't, but still nice that they do. So sad to get stuck by that volcano and lose an entire week thoguh. Sofia looks different without all the snow...
