BetterWorld Books

Last week I ordered some used books from BetterWorld Books. Basically, they sell used and new books and the profits go to fund literacy programs around the world. I bought 5 board books for the tykes and 4 books for me, all for $3.48 a book. Yep, I got 9 books for less than 35 bucks. AND, shipping within the US is FREE -- including APO addresses. Otherwise, worldwide it's about $3 a book...

I love this site! They have loads of books, though the price for a new one is way more than through Amazon or something, so I'd only buy the used ones, which start at $3.48. They have a big selection, but it's kind of hit or miss to find a certain book used. If it's rather new-ish, it's harder to find a cheap used one. I looked for some books Z has his sights on, but none were available used, so too bad for him. I did get a couple of Leon Uris books, I LOVE his books, wonderful historical fiction. Especially Trinity, Exodus, and The Haj. Oh, and Mila 18. Good stuff!

Anyway, we got the books today, and I definitely give BetterWorlds two thumbs up....great deal, large selection, FREE shipping, and you're helping fund literacy. Wow. The books are used, but they were all still in really good condition. Even the kids' books. What a great program!! Oh, wait, I did pay for shipping --$0.27. They do this carbonfree shipping thing, where they calculate how much carbon dioxide will be sent out into the environment by sending your books to you, and then charge a few cents a book to purchase clean energy credits, etc., to offset the emissions from the shipping. Honestly, I'm not sure what the clean energy credits are/do, and I don't feel like researching it right now, but it sounds like it's helping the environment! Yet another plus.

So, if you need some nice, cheap, used books, and want to help the world, check out it out. Here is their site to buy books, and FAQs about them here.

Hey Fiona, Energy credits so far are a voluntary thing, but many people want to make them voluntary. the basic idea is to create a market where people can buy and sell a fixed number of energy credits (also called carbon credits). It is a great idea, but very hard to figure out how many credits should be in the market (if they put too many out then people will overpollute--too few and it would hurt the economy). In a nutshell: people pollute for free right now, but might have to eventually pay to pollute (this will make it so companies have an incentive to pollute less). I hope my explanation wasn't too confusing! Sounds like a great place to get books. I'll have to check it out (Megan was wondering the best way to buy books when we're in Europe). Thanks for the tip!
