Christmas Eve was sooo fun for Zachariah and me (that is grammatically correct, even if it doesn't sound like it... ;) Despite the fact that we didn't get to bed until....um...2:30. That's right. 2:30. But we made tamales that night, and then a bunch of cookies and some food for dinner the next day at our friends' place. My family has always had tamales for Christmas Eve, that's a Mexican tradition. And though we aren't Mexican (I know...you thought we were...) we are TEXAN, even the Irish part of us, and there's a whole lotta Mexican influence there, especially in the Valley, where the non-Irish part comes from. That made total sense, I know it. Anyway, we didn't have corn husks to wrap them in, so we used foil, which actually worked pretty well. The tamales just don't end up with those fun stripes. A special thanks to Zac's co-worker/friend, Lisa, who told us how to make these at the last minute!
Spreading the masa...
Ready to be steamed. That's me. Just to give a human face to the process...
Yeah, we need to get some grown-up kitchen supplies. Like an actual steamer thing. Until then, a plate balanced on an upside-down bowl with some water in the bottom of the pot works fine.
And the finished product! They were actually pretty delicious, for our first time. Next time we'll spread the masa thinner, I think, but other than that...yummm! Even the kiddos like them.
After all that cookin', we wrapped presents while watching Scrooged and put together the cutest little kitchen. Okay, Z put it together. I held a door or two for him to screw on. But it took a freakish amount of time. That's okay, we were up with the fireworks anyway! Uruguayans love their fireworks. As well they should! None of those annoying restrictions on them. You can buy any and all kinds, and shoot them off wherever the heck you want. So what that fireworks-related injuries are super high during the holidays? If you were up on our roof Christmas Eve, you would realize that none of that matters...only how loud and spectacular they are! we were literally surrounded by fireworks...they were coming from the roofs of other houses in our neighborhood, from the yards, from the streets...all over the city. They start about midnight-ish, and go on for a while. It was amazing, being smack in the middle of it all! And I was glad our house is mostly cement. It really felt like we were in a war zone, even though we have no real idea what that would be like, thankfully. So, since everyone has extra time to watch super scaled down fireworks, we are including a 3 min long video. There are some extra cool parts at 1:18 and at 2:30...it was great.
Los Fuegos Artificiales...FIREWORKS!!!
And just so we have a picture of Nuala...a nice big Christmas grin!! Bran's main present was a GeoTrax train, which he LOVES, and Nuala got a set of things for her baby dolls. We'd been "encouraging" them to ask Papa Noel for a train and baby doll stuff, so when Bran ripped open his GeoTrax and she saw that he did actually get his "coo-coo train" she was sooo excited and started yelling, "Noona! Baby! Noona! Baby!" The gears were a-turning. Santa did come through..
We had a great little Christmas. So fun with Bran and Nuala. We enjoyed feeling the Christmas spirit, we talked to our families, and sang Christmas songs, and read the Christmas story, and played and ate...and now have to wait a whole YEAR to do it all again! Well, not the Christmas spirit part, hopefully we can keep that with us all year round. So, Merry Christmas!! ¡Y feliz año nuevo!!

Christmas is just soo much funner with little ones! I had admired that little red kitchen! Gwen had gotten the pink one they had a few years ago. It's been the best toy. Merry Christmas again.
That is so cute. Hopefully I can get My Christmas Pics posted soon. Im a little slow. Mathias still loves playing with his GeoTrax alot.
How fun! I loved how they came down with their blankets and Bran wasted no time in looking, he got down to business, playing! I know what you mean about not too many pictures, we ended up with 3 or something, haha! They are so cute and cool fireworks too! 2:30 isn't so bad, right? not for the smiles on their faces!
Oh, the tamales! They looked pretty good! Way to go!
We really enjoyed your post!!! Those are great videos... amazing fireworks :) Yes, I guess when Nuala saw Bran's coo-coo, she assumed that she would indeed receive her baby :) Oh, the kitchen is so nice ... no wonder Bran was enjoying it so much... and what a pretty, inviting colour ...red! I can see why it'd be easy enough to talk 2-yr-olds into staying in their room till 8:30am ... after all, how much experience do they have dashing downstairs to see what Santa brought!!! Thanks for letting us feel a part of your Christmas morning... we LOVED it!!! xox
...forgot to mention how good the nice big chunky tamales look!!! ...they look great... what is that greenish stuff you have in them, that I see oozing out, and making them look so nice and filled ? We had some ... pretty small pork tamales from HEB ... and they were not oozing anything (in other words, it'd have been ok w/us if they were a little more filled...) even so, they were good. I am impressed that you made them ... you have given me incentive... I guess one can't buy tamales there? xox
Cute videos and pictures! It looks like y'all had a way fun Christmas. I'm impressed with the tamales, they look pretty yummy...we got some from someone at Marc's work, but then somebody forgot to bring them in from the car for a while...which probably accounts for the tummy-aches they gave us :( Maybe next year we'll try it your way! I'm impressed that Bran figured out that if he got his train, it meant Nuala got her baby doll stuff! What smart kiddos!
I said Bran, but meant Nuala...I'm sure you figured that out...
We filled the tamales with chicken (from a rotisserie chicken, nice and easy ;) mixed with pureed green chiles and jalapeños, and a can of cream of chix soup. I think that's about it...it was pretty good! Nope, it's not easy to find tamales here. and, yep, you should definitely bring them in from the car, haha!
Yum, tamales! Something I have never made... Thank you for sharing so much of your christmas with us. Christmas morning is so much more exciting with little ones. I love the little kitchen and love the picture of Bran on the pot, playing with the kitchen.
So fun. Christmas with kids is the best. I miss you here in
Boerne. Maybe next year. I remember when I got a kitchen for Christmas. It turned out to be a real deal because that was the year we went to Houston to have a late Christmas with my grandparents and then our van burned down. Way to make those tamales.
That kitchen is awesome (I mean the play one, although I'm sure your real kitchen is awesome too). Where did you get it?
What a nice Christmas. I was happy to be in the snow, but the sun looks good too.
Paige got a kitchen for Christmas when she was 3, we just sold it so another kid can enjoy now. Paige and Jonah stopped playing with it, but still play a lot with all the fake food, so we kept that.
wow-those tamales look great! very impressive! What a fun time you guys are having in Uraguay! Hurray for adventure, by the way, could your kids get any cuter? I can't believe they are 2!!!!!
Kristen, we got the kitchen from Costco...
Great post!!! Your tamales look so good! We totally bucked tradition and went with Chinese for Christmas Eve this year. ;o) Sooo cute that Nuala knew she was getting her baby doll stuff when Bran got his train, LOL! And, yeah, you'll get used to having 2 year olds...about the time they turn 3. ;o)LOL
You have brought back memories of our Texas days of making tamales (I only did it once) and watching fireworks. In the midwest we don't get that at all this time of year. Love the photos.
