The Twins' New Rides

Look what we got! Bike seats for the FRONT of our bikes! Nuala and Bran love them. We do, too. We have a trailer, but they aren't wild about it. Bran gets restless after about 5 minutes, they can't see that well, and honestly, the driving here is a little crazy and having my children in a trailer on these streets about gives me a heart attack. Also, we can't get it over the curbs while crossing the main road to the Rambla (big sidewalk that runs along the beach), so that's a bummer. Anyway, we got these seats on Friday, as well as the humongous helmets the twins are wearing, and it's been a lot of fun riding around now. This is Bran right before the first ride. He is so dang cute. He'll sometimes smile on demand for pictures now, but they're always these super cheesy grins, where his eyes just squish shut and disappear...where in the world could he have gotten that from?? Imagine, his eyes just vanishing when he smiles!

Yep, Z's wearing a rock climbing helmet. Whatever works.

This is our second ride, just today. On the previously "forbidden" Rambla.

And Z and Nuala. AND, a cute German-esque house in the background.

We stopped at the beach on the way back. Still too cool to get in the water, but not too cool to play on the sand. Bring on Spring!

I love it when they hold hands! Okay...they only ever hold hands when we say, "Hey! Hold hands!!" But they seem to enjoy it. And I have dreams of spontaneous hand-holding... See Nuala's black eye? She was playing on one of our dining table chairs and fell and knocked herself on the armrest. About 40 minutes before church on Sunday. She totally reminds me of a football player now, with the big smudge under her poor ojito.

Bran ambling along, enjoying himself. Ho-hum, ho-hum...See the cute fishing boats in the background?

The Eye. And the rest of Nuala. Not all of her, but a good portion. She was chucking shells and sand into the water with great vigor, doing that high-pitched squeal thing at the same time. Yep, good times.

And just when you thought it couldn't get any better...boat trailers! Which of course are meant to be driven. These provided a lot of entertainment! A lot.

The ride home. The two-domed building by Z's head is our neighborhood casino, and we live a few more streets past it.

This is how the Friday excursion with the new seats ended. A sad little guy...he just wanted to keep going and going...even though his little hands were popscicles. But to finally be in the "driver's" seat for real...a dream come true for Bran!

They both always want to be holding the handlebars. We get in trouble if we try to hold them, though sometimes we just have to. And Nuala! The rascal! When she rides on Z's bike, she's always flipping through his gears, it's great! My gears shift differently, and she has yet to figure them out...give her time...

Those bike seats are really cool! I had bike seats that sat on the Back of my bike. How do you think they would compare? Safety wise that is. We just did a mountain bike ride from the top of Mt. Ashland to Lithia Park in Ashland. 15 miles. Look for the posts eventually.

Love those seats! We're planning on getting the little trailer for the babe, but once she's older, I think those bike seats would be great!

Oh, fun! We have a trailer that is just okay, but Jack and Jonah love the bike seat on the back of my bike. I did think about getting one like yours. How does it feel? Is it wobbily at all? Does it feel heavy? How hard is it to turn?

I've never used the back mounted seats. Well, not as an adult, I did ride in them as a child...but what I've read is that front mounted ones are safer in that they create a better center of gravity/balance is better. It makes sense to me, and it feels great.

My only problem (and I don't think Z has this problem) is getting on. Usually to get going I jump on and just start pedalling without sitting down, but the baby seat is a little bit in the way for that, so I've been wobbly getting started these first couple of times. It's not wobbly at all while riding, in fact, it feels very stable, going back to the center of gravity thing, and I can stand up to pedal fine after I get going. I just need to get used to getting on with it there.

It doesn't make as tight of a 180 degree turnaround as without it, but still not a major problem. Normal turns, just left or right, are fine. We do have to hang on to the bikes if we get off but the babes are still in, because THEN they're unbalanced. What else...apparently with other front mounted seats, peoples' knees were hitting them, but it seems these seats are angled to avoid that as much as possible. And our knees don't really hit the seats. Sometimes they touch the seat, but not in an uncomfortable/impeding way.

I think they're great, I really like that I have Bran or Nuala right in front of me, it feels super safe and stable, it's easy to point things out to them and they have a great view. And people think it's really cute :)

How's THAT for a long comment...

Super long... if commenting were an olympic event you'd definitely take the gold :0) They are sooo cute! I love the front bike seats, looks like N&B do too. and I'm sure front seats are your preference after the biking incident of '85(?) Poor Bran having to get out before he's ready...and Nuala's eye, ouch. Hope it gets better soon, what fun family bike rides.

Very cool. I think the holding hands picture is adorable too! And poor Nuala, that shiner just reinforces her tough girl look ;)

OOOOOOH! I love them! I have been wanting to get the trailer for Alexander, but they are pretty expensive. The seats on the back have always scared me because i am just about the clumsiest person on the planet. I have a great memory of my dad crashing with Molly on the back of his bike and cutting her chin...i remember it so well because my parents then wanted me to ride with my dad on the way home...I wasn't having any of it! I was only about 2 years old, but i remember it VERY well! But, it seems like Alex would be a lot safer on the front of the bike. I also don't like the idea of him being in the trailer so far behind me...Hmmmmmm You've given me a lot to think about. :) Thank you.

Maybe i could get Silver for the 2nd longest comment. :)

Hi .....This is Mom...the pics are great! Thanks for sharing. I love the bike seats...didn't even know about them! What incident in 1985? The children look like they are really enjoying sitting up front...no wonder Bran didn't want it to end!!! Poor Nuala, at first I thought it was a bike accident (viewed the pics b4 the comments)...guess it doesn't really hurt now. Oh, the beach was beckoning me! I enjoyed walking along there, and watching little N&B finds "spoons" (that broke easily) Glad you parents are enjoying the bike rides too! I need to dig out my old one and get it in shape again! xox

I think it was in '84, actually, since I was 5 and Tara wasn't born yet. Remember, Mom, I bugged you and bugged you to give me a turn in Gary's seat, and my long gangly kindergarten legs hung down so far that my foot got caught in the spokes? OUCH. And then you called Laurie Ball's dad to come look at it and I was soooo embarrassed because he then would know I -- a big girl of 5 -- had been riding in the baby's bike seat AND he saw me crying. It was pretty traumatic.

I love the seats we are thinking about getting the "side car" like a motorcycle but maybe we will consider these instead!

Poor Bran! His sad face melts my heart. Those seats are pretty cool. If Matt had a bike and we went riding ever I would totally get those.
