9/11

I can't believe it's been 5 years since 9/11. Much has changed, more so for some than for others. Zachariah and I were living in Egypt when it happened, and didn't get many of the details until we moved up to Belgium a week or so later. Like the rest of the country, we couldn't believe the horror that had taken place on American soil, but we weren't surprised at the way in which Americans embraced each other and banded together.

I remember when it happened, we were at the pyramids, blissfully ignorant of the tragedy unfolding. Eating at a little pizza place later that day, we saw the news for the first time. The owner and several other people at the restaurant -- all Middle Easterners -- expressed their sympathy and displeasure to us. That's always refreshing for me to think back on: even though celebrations were taking place in the streets of Cairo that evening, at the same time many of the locals were appalled at what had happened.

Evil exists, but so does good, everywhere. 9/11, we will never forget.
