Koprivshtitsa

Waaaay back in September we went to a little town called Koprivshtitsa. It's a picturesque little place, and it was quite gorgeous outside... as you can see... Sigh. I'm not ready for cold wet weather... Hot cocoa, hot cocoa, Christmas, hot cocoa... okay, a little more ready. Our Lonely Planet guidebook describes Koprivshtitsa thus:
"This unique museum-village, nestled in wooded hills between Karlovo and Sofia, is a perfectly - and deliberately - preserved hamlet filled with Bulgarian National Revival-period architecture, cobblestone streets, and bridges that arc gently over a lovely brook... Because much of Koprivshtitsa is filled with rambling, overgrown lanes, it's also a very safe and fun place for children to scamper around in." And scamper they did. It was a fun day!

At the grave of Dimcho Debelyanov, a poet "who penned outstanding works before tragically dying in WWI," according to Lonely Planet. I'm sure he was a wonderful poet... I just feel kinda weird saying that about someone if I haven't read his/her stuff, ya know? This is a statue of his mother, awaiting his return. It says, " I die, and am yet born again in light."
Nice big Soviet truck! Bran was quite impressed. He wanted to climb in it, but since the owner wasn't around we thought he better not. He's gotten to climb into all sorts of stuff by being cute, like bulldozers...um... bulldozers... alright, he's gotten to climb into a few bulldozers, but I'm sure the cute factor would work on truck drivers, too.

This fellow is Todor Kableshkov, who proclaimed the national uprising against the Turks in 1876. The really important thing is that he was holding a gun.

World War II memorial.
Overall, Bulgarian playgrounds have turned out to be slightly less dangerous than their Uruguayan counterparts. The two we hit in Koprivshtitsa had a couple of issues, though. The swing above, obviously, is broken... no biggie, still fun. Nuala actually tried to execute a flying leap onto the swing she's on, because there's a large puddle under it. She didn't quite make it... She was hanging on, her buns dangling low, slowly sliding down, yelling for help. If we hadn't been laughing so much while hurrying over, we might have made it in time to keep all of her outta the muddy water. We didn't. She dried.
After walking around, we were ate our kebapche (yummy mix of pork, beef, and spices in a sausage-y shape) next to this playground. Once again, yelling from Nuala drew our attention. And a whole lotta other people's, too, haha! There was a hole right in the middle of the slide, just big enough for her little leg to get stuck in. Z wiggled her free, but it was pretty funny.
Some Thracian burial mounds we saw on the way home. There are lots of these dotting Bulgaria and I always means to take pics of them and then -- zoom! Zach Bulgarian-drives right by 'em!

What a lovely and interesting town. The twins certainly were busy, and Maeve was wishing she could run with them!
Love, Dad and Mom xoxoxo
