Many people ask us about the variety of food that Uruguayans eat, usually assuming that they eat spicey foods somewhat akin to Mexican food served in the States. Well, Uruguayans don't have a huge variety, and they generally don't like spicy. I've even been to a couple of restaurants that don't offer salt and pepper (a bit on the extreme side). What Uruguayans do well is beef. Like Argentina they are huge beef producers/exporters to the U.S., Europe, and Russia. So, generally all the restaurants have a parillada (barbecue pit), and just about everywhere you go has the standard Uruguayan cuts of meat like Entrecot, Lomo (your basic steak), and Matambro on the menu.
But the king of Uruguayan uniqueness in culinary exploration has to be the Chivito. A Chivito is simply a combination of all the things that Uruguayans like to eat (it saves on ordering them separately)... a thin slice of lomo, topped with ham, cheese (Uruguay does have some excellent cheeses due to the large mix of Italian and Swiss immigrants), bacon (sometimes), boiled eggs (naturally), olives, tomatoes, lettuce, red bell pepper, mayonnaise, and of course the bread.
It sounds way over the top on cholesterol among other things, honestly tastes decent enough, yet I usually feel ill for about two days after eating just a half (I refrain from downing a whole one for fear it may blow a precious heart valve). And here is an action shot of my lovely wife.

Yum!
Sounds like a great sandwich, you will have to make one for us on your next visit. Nice to see that Fiona can dribble her food also.
Love to all, Dad Ricker
Thanks for sharing that. I had no idea what kind of food they eat in Uraguay. I guess I thought they might eat spicy stuff too. That is what I like best...
Hey that looks pretty good. Fresh produce even!
In Brazil they normally ruin burger-type foods by globbing on a ton of mayo and ketchup and nasty canned peas. I finally had to give up eating them b/c they were such a gut bomb- I would get sick EVERY time!
That picture of Fiona is hilarious. It looks like she is going to take the whole thing down in one mouthful.

Hmmm I would love to try it. Sounds interesting. It just doesn't seem right that any South or Central American country eats bland food, but I know many don't
Wow, I am so attractive there! I just can't get over how good-looking I am. And so ladylike. Feel free to come look at my photo any time you need a refreshing pick-me-up of true beauty.
It is always amazing to me the different foods of different cultures. Sometimes I think it is crazy it can be so different in so many places, but then after sitting on a plane forever to get to one of those places I remember how big the world really is.
Oh yeah for the record, Uruguay is the #3 uncooked beef exporter to the USA behind Australia and New Zealand. And they are #1 in the world for export of Organic beef.
Is that why you run Fiona? So you can eat those yummy looking sand.?
mmmm...that's quite a lot of flavors for one sandwich. Awesome picture Fiona...
That sandwich looks disgusting to me! Fiona seems to enjoy it though...
Okay, so I check out your blog daily to see if you've posted anything new. Each time, I see the picture of that sandwich. It looks more disgusting to me each time...
