Communication is good. Without it, wars and domestic squabbles take place. Do you really think Alexander the Great would have continued on his conquering rampage if he and the Persians had just talked it out? ...okay, yes, he probably would have. But -- if Zachariah had told me that he planned to forget to start the dishwasher the other night, I wouldn't have expected clean dishes the next morning and then been a little ticked when they were still dirty...so, communication is good.
And Nuala and Bran are getting better and better at the whole communicating thing. In fact, they are quite the little linguists. They can converse with dogs, dragons, snakes and monkeys, should the need arise.
They can understand lots of stuff in Spanish, including some body parts, colors, toys, foods, animals, commands, etc. They don't say anything in Spanish yet, or English, really...well, a little. Nuala says "amen" when she feels like it. And "no-no-no-no-no-no." A lot. And never just "no," it has to be a long string. Oh, and "banana," or rather, "nana." Hmmm...actually, I guess that's all Spanish, too... They say "mama" and "dada" and "refrigerator." Okay, not that last one, but wouldn't that be cool?! How random would that be? And of course, lots of babble-talk.
And they can sign a little. I know several of you have little ones that sign, and sign a lot more than our two do, but humor me! ;) (And thanks for the inspiration, of course!) We finally started teaching them some in January. We've only done "more," "milk," and "all done," and it was so cool when they finally got it!! I have been lazy, and have not expanded on what they know, but wow! It's fun communicating this way with them! So, here is a video of some signing. (Usually Nuala is super excited in the mornings to nurse, and signs enthusiastically with both hands. But of course not when I'm trying to film her. And usually we don't hafta say the word to get them to sign it, but with the camera out they were a little wary and needed some prompting...)

Congrats to the twins on there signs. Mathias started refusing to sign and very rarely will he let me teach him a new one but at least he is starting to talk now!! so dont worry about feeling lazy.
That is so cute! We've been learning to sign in our Y.W. group. I'm terrible at remembering it. My nickname is banana. I guess in sign you pick an animal or a fruit or anything I suppose and that's your name. One of the girls is tiger. It's easier than spelling their name each time. Keep it up! It is such a great skill to be bilingual!
That was so cute! I love how Nuala drops her 'toy' to do the sign. You might wish you had taught them more signs after they start talking and wont stop! Then you can't play the 'no talking' game.
ha! I love how you describe everything. :D
That's a lot of fun that they are picking it up.
*lol* the highchair part makes them seem like a couple of puppies begging for treats. Maybe it would be easier to teach my kid dog tricks instead of baby sign language. hmmm... not a bad idea. Not sure how that would go over in public though. j/k
Good job guys!
Okay so you taught your kids some tricks!!! Very cute and yet sometimes like training a puppy just the other Day Mia learned to growl!!!!
