It took about 2 hours to get there, so the first order of business was letting the kiddos out to eat and play for a while. They had a blast crawling around in a grassy area on the banks of the river, chewing on sticks and laughing at some big, friendly dogs.
Then we walked around for a while in la Ciudad Vieja, the old town. It was fun and charming, with winding streets and cute houses, etc. We should've worn the babies, though, since it was VERY cobblestoney. There were museums, and old churches, and the original wall, stuff like that. In one shady courtyard, there was a large whale skeleton, and some statues of different animals. Kinda random, but interesting. Then we left. We got some empaƱadas on the way out, cheap and greasy, just the way we like them! Yum!!
Oh yeah, we stopped on the way to get some gas, and there at the gas station was a "Mate Amigo." Only in South America...it's a vending machine for hot
water to add to the yerba mate in your gourd, in the event that your thermos runs dry. Soooo many people walk around the streets, in the stores, wherever, clutching their mate gourd and a big thermos of hot water to keep adding to it. This is the only vending machine we've seen so far, so perhaps they are just now making their debut...we'll keep watching for them, as I'm sure all of you are dying to know whether they catch on or not!

I really wanted to see the weird animals. Where's the pic? The trip sounded super fun. Hot water machines sound good for hot chocolate. Especially on the coast! Wish I was there!
ok...I'm an idiot. I looked again at the pics and noticed the weird animals. I thought the skeleton thing was a broken down shed! LOL!
The pic of N & B in the car is a great one! and what a fun trip! Maybe you should invest in one of those hot water machines? since they are the next big thing you know.
I love to eat sticks! Great shots.
Sounds like a very cool trip. All the old original buildings and stuff sound neat to investigate.
That is so funny that people actually walk around glued to their yerba matte. The hot water vending machine is an excellent idea whoever thought it up! We have a Dutch Brothers Coffee stand on practically every corner for our refills... does that count? haha
How fun! Sounds so interesting over there! Yes and the picture of them in the car is way to cute! They always seem happy, happy mom =happy babys!
That sounds so fun, and the twins look so cute in all those pictures! I also really liked the line "we should have worn the babies"...
I know this is all I ever say, but your kids are so dang cute! I love your pictures. That hot water amigo thing is interesting. Never thought of that before.
Okay, so Megan already commented on here, but I just wanted to make an observation... There are never any pictures with Fiona in them on the blog!! I mean, I understand that normally she is the one behind the camera, but your kids are pretty adept at stripping, thieving and climbing so I'm sure they could learn to snap a few shots! haha. Or maybe Zac?

P.S. Your blog is great and so are your little ones!
Thanks for noticing, Greg! Yes, I say that often..."I always take the pictures! I'm never in them!" Well, sometimes Z does, but I think I'm a bit of a camera nazi...I'll try to fix that! I must say, it's a good thing that Z is so good-looking, since y'all are forced to see a lot of him! ;D
that was very exciting...I love hearing all about your escapades...it's a great journal thing, and we all love it...the babies are so beautiful...
Love, Mom xox (dad too prob though he's in Boerne, and I'm in Virginia for a few weeks...)
