So Saturday we went to this great swimming hole out near the Shenandoahs. Zac became aware of it after taking the scouts out there to camp (being scoutmaster does have its benefits). It was a lot of fun!
We had to hike about a mile and a half in, but it was worth it as it was just the two of us when we finally got there. Of course, the overcast day could have had something to do with that...It was kinda creepy, got deep quickly and the water was oh so still. You wouldn't have been surprised to find a lurking fresh-water shark silently stalking you, or a man-eating snapping turtle...yikes. We survived, though. We climbed on top of a big cement thing in the middle of the reservoir and spent a while smacking flies with our hands and dropping them to the depths below for the tons of little fish to eat, a feat Zachariah was amazingly good at. Yep, a good day.
Then we swam around a bit and left. This was blog-worthy because in our 3 years out here, we have found very few natural places to swim in the DC area. We always have to drive at least an hour to find a little creek or river or reservoir, and none have been that great. This one was a bit far, also, but it's such a pretty drive, heading west through Virginia...kind of a bonus. The rivers around DC are a bit gross, and besides that it's very illegal to take a dip. Maybe something to do with the sue-happy mindset???
